The reasons for the “mid-career crisis” are not well understood. There are multiple factors which prompts an individual to look for a career change or start fresh: the narrowing of options, the inevitability of regret, the tyranny of projects successively completed and many more which when added makes it a chore, to go and put yourself out there.
As life goes on, options are constrained, and experience which is a powerful also begins to limit. Every choice results in the exclusion of alternatives. It is often in mid-career that fun of missing out is replaced by fear of missing out…. the joy of finding things that enrich us. When we look back at our lives, we conjure—sometimes with relief but other times with regret—the roads not taken. The journey also on the other hand could have been the most satisfying one with many accolades along the way but there starts to build some angst of “what could have been”. For some it is an unsatisfied professional career and for some their role or services may no longer add value. The desire or the need to do something new stems from here. The something new could be an entrepreneurial journey or switch to a new to a more gratifying option of work.
But are most people ready to start fresh? Governed with feelings of uncertainty, fear of failure, working with colleagues younger in age and balancing personal commitments, the common thought which crosses the mind “Is it too late……. Although it may sound trite, it is never too late. That however doesn’t mean that transition will be simple. Change is hard even if it is well prepared.
So, what does this group have in them to make this change worth exploring and create a new work identity
